A day in the life

A typical weekday for a Kenyan child who is able to go to school is very long. They get up before it is light, and have an action-packed day lasting until after dark 14 hours later.

  • Time to get up. It’s still dark and the moon is out.

  • I find my way out in the dark to the pit we use for a toilet hoping I won’t step on a snake on the way.

  • There is nothing to eat or drink so I don’t have any breakfast. I am one of the lucky children at school as I have a school uniform to put on, but I don’t have any shoes yet.

The school uniform is a brown dress with cream collar and cuffs or cream blouse and brown skirt for girls and a cream shirt and brown shorts for boys.

  • I start walking out on the track. It is summer so the ground is dry. I pass by different homes on the walk I take.

  • I have to avoid the stones as they can cut my feet but also I have to duck under a really big cashew tree.

  • In the summer it is easier to walk than in the rainy season as there are many big puddles I have to avoid. And when it rains it really rains so hard.

  • I pass by goats grazing and a hen with its chicks. One more track and then I reach school.

  • As soon as I arrive at school I have to do my homework as I can’t do it at home as there is not enough light. We don’t have electricity. The classroom is empty.

  • We get a desk from the overnight storage and start to study. I quite enjoy doing my homework.

  • It’s time now for morning assembly. We recite our school motto which is ‘Aim Higher’. We want to do our best so aim higher as we are so pleased to be at school.
